The main objectives of this programme focus on the improvement of the food supply situation of the municipalities- inhabitants by promoting crop cultivation (introduction of new vegetable and fruit varieties) and by introducing site-specific agro-forestry and small animal husbandry.
During the embargo imposed on Burundi by its neighbours and the international community, the project could survive thanks to the efforts of the local team that continued working with the little funds remaining from the prior project phase.
The programme was officially resumed in 1998 in order to ensure the sustainability of its results, and to make sure that the local population take over the extension services.
During the current project phase, which was approved after the end of the embargo, the project will be definitely handed over to the target group and to local experts.
